Speaker Bio
With a shared interest in exploring design across a wide range of scales, programs and disciplines, partners Joshua Aidlin and David Darling started Aidlin Darling Design around a woodshop in 1997. In the subsequent years, they have built an award-winning practice around the pursuit of design that emerges from and for our embodied human condition and its intimate bond with the world. Through a collaborative process that is both rational and sensual, the latent potential of each project emerges through an intensive understanding of site. Maintaining a closely held conviction that design can enlighten the human spirit by engaging all of the senses, they have cultivated a diverse and collaborative studio that acts as a creative hub for an extended network of collaborators, including artists, builders, craftspeople, engineers and chefs. The firm’s recent work includes the Geneva Car Barn & Powerhouse Cultural Arts Center, the Prow at Expedia Group, the Contemplative Sciences Center at the University of Virginia, and the new AIA San Francisco Headquarters. This transdisciplinary approach has allowed the firm to take on unique, project types inclusive of schools, community centers, galleries, contemplative chapels, retreat spaces, restaurants, wineries and residential commissions with locations stretching across the United States and as far as Doha and Hong Kong.
Since its inception, Aidlin Darling Design has garnered over 200 regional, national and international awards including the first AIA/COTE Top Ten Plus Green Project Award, two international Civic Trust Awards, six National AIA Awards and two James Beard Awards. In 2013, the firm was bestowed a National Design Award from the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum for the firm’s full body of work.
